yes :)
The close up horizon was painted in photoshop with the help of a few of my own cloud textures to enhance the details.
The asteroids are done in 3ds max, as well as the basic shape of the planet with the applied texture :)

depends :) In the past I've done photomanipulations with stocks from sites like sxc.hu that provide stocks free of charge under specific conditions.
Nowadays I use reference photos to paint my stuff. In this piece for example I have used a photo of mine above the clouds as a reference for the closest planet.
